19th March 2010

Call for entrants for Flora Womens Mini Marathon 2010.
Search also underway to find most inspirational participant who will be crowned "2010 Flora Heart Hero"!

The Flora Womens Mini Marathon, the hugely popular 10k event which attracts over 40,000 participants every year and raises millions for charity, is calling on ladies from all over Ireland to register for the 2010 event.

The Flora Womens Mini Marathon will take place in Dublin on Bank Holiday Monday 7 June and Flora is encouraging women of all ages to get involved as part of its campaign to support and encourage heart health awareness and a healthier overall lifestyle through diet and exercise.

Those interested in taking part in the event can register online at www.florawomensminimarathon.ie or complete the weekly entry forms in the Evening Herald from Wednesday, 3 March.

This year Flora has also set up the Flora Heart Heroes social network to celebrate the wonderful efforts of the thousands of women who participate in the event each year to improve their own health and also raise money for charity. The initiative will enable women to share their individual stories with fellow participants and to also nominate an overall Flora Womens Mini Marathon Heart Hero.

Women can tell their own stories or nominate a friend to be the Flora Heart Hero at www.floraheartheroes.com. Participants can also link to the campaign from the Flora Womens Mini Marathon Facebook and Twitter pages.

In May visitors to the website will be invited to vote for the most inspirational story and that person will then be crowned the Flora Heart Hero at a special ceremony on race day.  The overall winner will receive 1,000 for their preferred charity and two runners up will also receive 500 each for their chosen charities.

Niamh Lennon, Brand Manager, Flora says: The women who take part in this event, many of whom return year after year, have fantastic stories to tell. Each year we speak to women who have turned their lives around and greatly improved their heart health by getting in shape for the event. A huge number of participants are of course motivated to raise much-needed funds for charities close to their hearts. Weve set up the Flora Womens Mini Marathon Heart Heroes network to enable participants to share their stories and we also want to recognise and reward those women who continually inspire us all.

Since its inception in 1983, when 9,000 entrants took part, the 10k event has grown in popularity and stature to become the biggest all-womens event of its kind in the world, attracting over 40,000 participants each year. In previous years the event has been won by acclaimed athletes such as Sonia OSullivan, Catherina McKiernan, Pauline Curley, Marie Davenport, and last year Rosemary Ryan.

Pat Coyle, Chairman of the Womens Mini Marathon Committee commented: 2010 will mark the 28th year of the Womens Mini Marathon, and the seventh year that Flora has been involved as title sponsor.  Floras support to date has been invaluable to the success of the event and participants enjoyment.  Were particularly excited about this years Heart Hero initiative which celebrates the inspirational women who take part in this unique event. The Flora Womens Mini Marathon attracts a record number of entrants each year, and as a result, an unprecedented amount of money is raised for charity, so I hope everyone will get into the spirit of the event for 2010 and sign up to take part.

Charities from every county in Ireland are the biggest winners from the Flora Womens Mini Marathon. Since the event began in 1983, over 137 million has been raised for Irish charities, making it the biggest single day charity event in Ireland. In 2009, it is estimated that over 14m was raised, which proves just how popular the event is.
